Less than a month ago, on Aug. 12, 2023, Maria Gonzalez, an 11-year-old a Hispanic girl from Pasadena, Texas, was foundĀ having been brutally sexually assaulted and strangled. Her small lifeless body had been stuffed in a laundry basket and placed underneath her bed.
When her father, Carmelo Gonzalez, arrived home from work, he found her under her bed not breathing, and unresponsive, and he immediately called the police.
Upon close inspection of the premises, crime scene investigators found a key on the floor that no member of the family could account for — therefore the officer surmised that the killer must have dropped it.
Eventually, the authorities traced the key to a man named Juan Carlos Garcia-Rodriguez — a Guatemalan migrant who used to live in the same complex as Carmelo and his family.
Police Chief Josh Bruegger made the public announcement declaring that Garcia-Rodriguez had been arrested in Louisiana and was awaiting extradition back to Texas, charged with capital murder for Maria’s death.
